Envy = unhappy admiration
The truly confident don’t envy, and these people can be wealthy or poor.
Wealthy people often envy other wealthy people, but it is rare for a poor person to genuinely not envy a wealthy person. But when this rarity occurs, it is very charming.
The confidence required to not envy others possibly originates from one’s unconscious (or conscious) recognition that material possessions do not make us happy, and that each thing we ‘own’ is impermanent.
